EDITING AND PROOFREADING

Before I became an English teacher, I was an assistant book editor at a publishing house. It was an absolute dream job. But, 3 years and nearly 100 books later, my eyes started giving me warning signs that they weren’t able to keep up with the demands of a full-time copyeditor and proofreader. So, I had to move my passion for polishing the printed word from a full-time profession to a part-time pursuit. The fun part of that sad little story is that I now get to work on a wider variety of fascinating materials—more than merely book manuscripts!

COPYEDITING

Submit the typed rough draft of your text to me, and I will:

  • Make changes to fix any unclear, repetitive, disorganized, or contradictory parts of your writing. (You will be able to clearly see the changes I make and can undo anything that you dislike).

  • Bring to your attention any places that need to be corrected/improved, but that I am unable to address without the author’s input. I can contact you directly with the query, or insert a note explaining the problem and offering suggested solutions where I can.

  • Correct mistakes in grammar and vocabulary.

  • Correct mistakes in spelling and punctuation that I may happen to notice—but in this pass I will not be specifically reading for those issues. (See Proofreading below if you want me to focus on this.)

Service Rates for Copyediting:

4 cents per word or $50 per hour

NOTE: My average copyediting speed is between 1000-1500 words per hour.

PROOFREADING

Submit your final, edited text to me and I will:

  • find and correct any lingering mistakes in your text (spelling, punctuation, grammar, etc.) that you don’t want to be there in your writing when the public sees it.

  • crosscheck footnotes, table of contents, indices, headings, page numbers, charts, etc. (if there are any) for consistency and accuracy of information and format.

  • bring to your attention any glaring issues in the text’s meaning, organization, or facts that I happen to notice—but I will not be reading specifically for those issues (see the Copyediting service above if you want me to focus on these issues).

Service Rates for Proofreading:

2 cents per word or $40 per hour

NOTE: My average proofreading speed is between 1750-2500 words per hour.
